Songkran 2008 - Khon Kean, Thailand

In all my travel opportunities to the Kingdom of Thailand, this is the first time that I have witnessed, first-hand, the Songkran festivities. Although they said that there is more action in Bangkok where they block roads for the revelers, I think the same action is true here also in the city of Khon Kean, about 500km northeast of Bangkok, and a 45-minute plane ride.
They started a parade of sorts where there were a dazzling display of young "prince and princesses" on motorized or pushed carts or small vehicles. There were even the middle-aged people who dance to the tune of local percussion instruments amplified thru large speakers-on-wheels. It was really an elaborate display of local crafts, talents, and culture which can be seen and heard by crowds composed of locals and foreigners alike.
Part of this festival is the tradition of throwing water or wiping powder on faces to people who are on the streets or just passing by. I witnessed this boy shooting his water pistol to those who are part of the parade and even took on some who were in cars and small trucks! He in turn got splashed on as you can see. You can check out the other photos too.
The celebrations lasted for 3-days and 3-nights where they have set up a small stage on the side of the road where there were music concerts headed by local artists and others who wanted to display their musical talents.
All in all, it was a very entertaining, fun and "loud" event. Cheers!
